KENT ROCK had to be re-saddled at the start, causing a delay. KENT ROCK was squeezed out at the start. SHEPHERDS PURSE jumped awkwardly and thereafter was slow into stride. HAMLETS SPEEDO was bumped at the 100m by GOLDEN CRYSTAL, which shifted in away from the crop. Jockey van Niekerk, the rider of GOLDEN CRYSTAL, appeared before the Board and was advised to exercise more care in future. SIDECAR was difficult to settle in the early and middle stages. When questioned regarding why he had not ridden this gelding from a forward position as he had done in the gelding's previous two runs. Jockey Winnaar told the Stewards that this was his intention but the other horses were out of the stalls faster than he was and that he had to be content to race the gelding from a mid-field position mid field, and as the gelding had not settled it had been unable to finish the race off strongly. His explanation was noted. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine the gelding on its return to the unsaddling enclosure. In view of the performances from TRAPPED IN ICE, SHEPHERDS PURSE and SIDECAR, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine these geldings and submit a report. The saddle on KENT ROCK slipped forward in running, which placed Apprentice Neethling at a disadvantage. GOLDEN CRYSTAL and MOONLIGHT RUNNER were selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: TRAPPED IN ICE and SIDECAR - was inspected post race and no obvious abnormalities were detected. SHEPHERDS PURSE - returned short on the left fore.
