NIGHT TRIP jumped awkwardly outwards, losing one length and thereafter was slow into stride. READYTOGORIGHTNOW (AUS) was restless in the stalls. Jockey Neisius reported that WAY CLEAR did not stride out freely in running. In view of the performance from RIVER CROSSING, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine the gelding and submit a report. RIVER CROSSING was difficult to settle in the early stages. ASTRO NEWS was awkwardly placed on the heels of CAPTIVE ACTION in the concluding stages and could not be ridden to the finish. The Stewards reviewed Jockey van Niekerk's use of the crop on NIGHT TRIP in view of the Veterinary Surgeon's report. They were of the opinion that his crop use had not contravened any of the guidelines on the use of the crop, and therefore took no further action, other than to advise Jockey van Niekerk to exercise more care with the use of his crop in future. An inspection of Jockey van Niekerk's crop showed that it conformed to the required specifications. READYTOGORIGHTNOW (AUS) was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: WAY CLEAR - inspected post race and no obvious abnormalities were detected. RIVER CROSSING - returned lame on the right fore. NIGHT TRIP - returned with crop marks (2/5).
