As Jockey Mienie was medically indisposed, a replacement rider was weighed out and transported to the start, which resulted in the start of this race being delayed. HEAVENLY EXPRESS broke free and dislodged Jockey Strydom during loading and cantered to the 1400m where it was eventually brought in hand. Jockey Strydom was reunited with this colt, which was returned to the start, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and declared fit to race, causing a further delay to the start. BATTLE CHIEF was stubborn loading. BLACKADDER was slow into stride. GOLD BEAR jumped awkwardly leaving the stalls and lost 1 length. DRAGON'S BREATH lost 2 lengths. In view of the performance from GOLD BEAR, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. BLACKADDER was switched in at the 400m, to continue its run after racing tightly on the outside of ROMAN CARNIVAL, which rolled out slightly. SUPER CLUB shifted out away from the crop in the concluding stages. SUPER CLUB was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. When questioned regarding the improved performance from SUPER CLUB, Trainer Tolmay told the Stewards that this gelding had been racing on the sand surface with the exception of one race on the turf, had been handily placed in most of his races and had given ground in the closing stages. For today's race over the shorter distance of 1200m, he had decided to try different tactics and had advised his rider to race from in a rearward position in the hope that the gelding would finish the race strongly, which it had done. The Stewards noted Trainer Tolmay's explanation and advised him to use similar tactics in future and that the future performances of SUPER CLUB will be monitored.
