After the running of Race 4 torrential rain continued to fall unabated for an hour, which raised some concerns about the continuation of the race meeting. Jockeys Strydom and Khumalo, two Stipendiary Stewards and a Veterinary Surgeon inspected the course at about the 1200m, which is normally the area of the course which is of concern after every rainfall. It was decided that the course was still in satisfactory condition to continue racing, with the main concern being the close proximity of lightning strikes. A decision was made to wait until the lightening detector gave a favourable reading for the safe continuation of the race meeting and the race times were rescheduled accordingly. The official going, after consultation with the Racecourse Track Manager, was changed to soft from this race. Due to further lightning strikes the jockeys returned to the saddling enclosure and the trainers then lodged concerns about the pull-up area due to further rainfall. Trainers Goosen and Woodruff, Jockeys Strydom and Brown, two Stipendiary Stewards and the Veterinary Surgeons inspected that part of the track and found it to be in good enough condition to race on. The jockeys were sent out for race 5 after a clear reading from the lightening detector. THE CAPTAIN'S TUNE was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. NICKLAUS (BRZ) raced equipped with cheek pieces. Scratched: MR MULLINER and COMMODORE AL - insufficient recovery time. After the running of Race 5 a protest was lodged by two representatives of the jockeys on the grounds of the course being unsafe to continue racing, their primary concern being the state of the bend and that their horses had faltered on a number of occasions in the early and middle stages of race 5. A panel was formed and after giving consideration to the evidence put forward by the respective parties, it was decided to abandon race 6, in view of this being around the bend, and continuing with races 7, 8 and 9, which were sprint races down the straight.
