This race was run in steady rain with some thunder. PERFECT GRACE jumped outwards and made contact with the front gate and was bumped inwards by POST GRAD, which was brushed inwards by ICY AVALANCHE, which jumped awkwardly inwards. AGILE COMBAT was carried inwards leaving the 300m by PERFECT GRACE which rolled outwards and then was bumped inwards by DELICIOUS DAMOWIN (AUS), which was switched in to continue its run. After reviewing this incident, the Stewards ruled that this was a racing incident and took no further action. DOWN UNDER was hanging in, in the closing stages. Jockey Strydom appeared before the Board and was advised to ride his mounts with sufficient vigour and purpose so as to leave no room for query for the Stewards. In view of the performances of PARATUS and PERFECT END (AUS), which was subsequently declared a non-runner, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine these horses. Apprentice Zackey was charged with a contravention, read with Guideline G of the use of the crop, in that he struck the horse PERFECT END (AUS) unnecessarily when it was out of contention for a place. Apprentice Zackey signed an Admission of Guilt and was fined. SUMMIT was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. SUMMIT raced with a Cornell collar. Vet: PARATUS - examined post race, no significant findings. PERFECT END (AUS) - not striding out right front, veterinary report required prior to entry. Scratched: PERFECT END (AUS) - declared to be a non-runner due to being impeded by a Handler being late to release this geldings bridle as the start was effected. As a result PERFECT END (AUS) lost ground to the field. As the gelding proved to be fractious in the stalls just prior to this incident, the Stewards ruled that there was no malpractice from the Handler. Following the running of Race 3 there was a number of lightning strikes in the immediate vicinity of the racecourse which prevented the continuation of the racemeeting at the carded times. The Stewards delayed the running of Race 4 until there were favourable and safe readings from the lightning detector and satellite images available in the boardroom. The race times were rescheduled as a result of this.
