PEANUT BUTTER (C Orffer) was restless in the stalls. CAPE TO RIO (R Khathi) was slow into stride. QUEEN LOUISE (M Byleveld), which raced green and was hanging out, commenced to pull hard approaching the 900m and then had difficulty negotiating the turn, resulting in the filly racing very wide on the bend and compounding in the straight. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. Approaching the 1000m, APACHE GIRL (*J Solomons) was carried wide for a number of strides by WATCH ME NOW (S Cele) which raced onto the heels of RUBY RHYTHM (M Winnaar), had to ease and shifted out. At the 1000m, CAPE TO RIO (R Khathi) had to steady to avoid racing onto heels of PEANUT BUTTER (C Orffer). Jockey G Behr was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he struck ROSEMARY MEADOWN more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey Behr signed an admission of guilt and was given the penalty of a warning. In deciding on penalty, the Board considered the number of times (13) Jockey Behr struck ROSEMARY MEADOW, the manner in which he used his crop and his record in relation to this rule. WHAT A JEWEL, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer S Reeves-Ashby was advised.
