OLYMPIC BOLT (BRZ) was slow into stride. PIONEER SPIRIT and CAGE FIGHTER were selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer van Zyl was questioned with regard to the improved performance of PIONEER SPIRIT, the winner compared to this gelding's previous performance on the 16 December 2015 over 2400 metres. Mr van Zyl explained that this gelding is not suited to the longer distance of 2400 metres and that PIONEER SPIRIT is better suited to today's shorter distance of 1600 metres. This, in his opinion had accounted for the improvement shown today. He further undertook to race PIONEER SPIRIT over similar distance of today's race in future. In view of the performance of OLYMPIC BOLT (BRZ), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. BALTIC AMBER was eased momentarily at approximately the 1000 metre mark. PIONEER SPIRIT was hanging in at approximately the 150 metre mark, shifted in carrying CAGE FIGHTER inwards, who in turn carried MY TREASURE inwards. The Medical Officer reported that Apprentice Godden stood down after the running of this Race with a knee injury. Unable to continue riding. Vet: OLYMPIC BOLT (BRZ) - nothing obvious detected. Scratched: LAST TIGER - abscess left hind foot. TEAM GUYS (AUS) - not striding out right hind and was withdrawn by the Veterinary Surgeon.
