TAMBORA (R Khathi) jumped awkwardly, losing one length. MARCO POLO (M Byleveld), which pulled hard in the early stages, had to steady shortly before the finish when awkwardly placed between PINK FLOYD (G Behr) and DOPPIO ORO (O Noach). Assistant Trainer D McLachlan appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding the improved performance of LUCKY DANCER today compared to his run on 21st June 2020. Assistant trainer McLachlan stated that, in his opinion, this gelding is suited to a distance shorter than his previous run, which was over 1950m. He further stated that this horse has a tendency to over race in the early stages and the distance, combined with the soft underfoot conditions and had not suited this gelding on 21st June 2020. Jockey M Winnaar, who rode this gelding in his previous run, was called in and interviewed with regard to that run. The Stewards reviewed the race in his presence. Jockey Winnaar pointed out that he had raced from a very handy position without cover. The video showed that the field had also raced some distance off the inside running rail due to the soft underfoot conditions. He had encouraged this horse from the top of the straight; however, it did not respond and had compounded in the latter stages. This was confirmed by the video footage of that run. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding and had found nothing amiss. Both assistant trainer McLachlan and Jockey Winnaar reported that they could find nothing amiss with this gelding after the race and on his return to the stable. Based on trainer McLachlan's explanation, the Board has advised Assistant Trainer McLachlan to race this gelding over similar distances in future engagements and his performances will be monitored. Jockey M Winnaar, the rider of FINAL APPEAL, reported that this gelding took no interest in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. LUCKY DANCER, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer D McLachlan was advised. (SC) TAMBORA raced with cheek pieces (declared 11h46 on 20200727).
