POLAR SECRET broke through the front gates, restrained by the Rider, inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon, passed fit to race and was reloaded. Trainer Mayhew was advised to re-school this filly prior to her next engagement. LEMONADE RIVER, BODEGA and ROSE OF CASTILLE lost one length. At approximately the 200m RIVER EMPRESS was momentarily inconvenienced when awkwardly placed on the outside of MATSURI, which rolled out marginally. Thereafter she was tightened for galloping room and baulked for a number of strides in the concluding stages. Jockey Strydom appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding his ride on this filly. He explained to the Board that he had been baulked and interfered with by MATSURI, which shifted onto him. Thereafter this filly had made a respiratory noise in running and he did not persevere with his ride. Jockey Strydom was reminded of his obligations to make timeous and factual reports to the Stipendiary Board as well as to ride his mounts out with sufficient vigour and determination so as to leave no room for a query from the Stewards. In view of this report, Assistant Trainer Woodruff was requested to report back to the Board on the condition of this filly on return to stables. SHANKLY GATES and POLAR SECRET were selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. When questioned regarding the improved performance of SHANKLY GATES, Trainer Moffatt could offer the Board no suitable explanation. In view of this filly's erratic form, Trainer Moffatt was advised that this filly's future performances will be closely monitored and if she continues to race erratically, she may be suspended.
