LIVINGSTONE (C Orffer) cast his left front shoe on the way to the start. After a number of attempts, the course farrier was unable to replace it and after consultation with Trainer B Crawford, the right front shoe was removed and LIVINGSTONE raced unshod in front. The second bank of starting stalls had to be aligned, causing a delay. DEAR MR PRESIDENT (G Behr) jumped slow, losing two lengths and thereafter was slow into stride. ALINGALONGA (*L Tarentaal) and RED LARK (A Domeyer) jumped slow, losing one length. There was a lengthy delay to the start of this race as a result of a problem with the starting stalls and the shoe on LIVINGSTONE being removed. Jockey G Cheyne, the rider of SMILEATTHESUNSET, which was eased out of the race from the 400m, reported that this gelding choked up in the running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. Jockeys S Mbhele and C Orffer, the riders of TRACKER JACKER and LIVINGSTONE respectively, reported that their mounts did not act in the soft underfoot conditions. Approaching the 300m TICKET TO RIDE (B Fayd'Herbe), which was hanging in and proved difficult to assist, rolled in and brushed FORT RED (S Cele) on two occasions, resulting in FORT RED (S Cele) becoming unbalanced. Thereafter, despite being straightened, TICKET TO RIDE (B Fayd'Herbe) continued to hang in and shifted in slightly, resulting in FORT RED (S Cele) shifting in away from TICKET TO RIDE (B Fayd'Herbe). As a consequence, BENI DES DIEUX (R Khathi), which was attempting a run on the inside of TICKET TO RIDE (B Fayd'Herbe became tightened for galloping room, had to ease and bumped NORTHERN TUNE (J Bekker) inwards at the 150m MR FROSTIE (D Ashby) and CRACK IT OPEN (O Noach) which were racing behind and to the inside of NORTHERN TUNE (J Bekker), had to steady as a consequence. A stipendiary steward called for a race review regarding this incident and after viewing the video evidence, no further action was taken. GAINSFORD, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer VH Marshall was advised.
