THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) MERCY MISSION (M Mjoka) was slow into stride.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) STAGEWORLD (D De Gouveia) raced green.
b) Apprentice L J Ferraris reported that he felt something amiss with AL HAAMY (AUS) in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.
c) Jockey C Zackey reported that CAPTAIN CUPID was cut into in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this colt.
d) ANCIENT ROME (W Kennedy), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer A Peter, acting on behalf of Trainer P A Peter, advised (DR).
e) At approximately the 400m CASTLE CORNER (M van Rensburg) was carried out by ANCIENT ROME (W Kennedy) which hung out. Thereafter at approximately the 200m CASTLE CORNER (M van Rensburg) had to shift in to avoid running onto the heels of ANCIENT ROME (W Kennedy) which shifted out away from the crop. A race review was called into this incident by a member of the Stipendiary Board, which was followed by an objection being lodged by the Rider (M van Rensburg) of the 2nd placed horse (CASTLE CORNER) against the winner ANCIENT ROME on the grounds of interference from the 400m. After considering the evidence given, the board overruled the objection. In arriving at this decision the board considered the distance between first and second was three quarters of a length. Notwithstanding this incident, it always appeared that ANCIENT ROME had the measure of CASTLE CORNER and therefore the board was of the opinion that this incident had not affected the result of the race, overruled the objection and allowed the judges result to stand. Jockey M van Rensburg's deposit was refunded.
Jockey Kennedy the rider of ANCIENT ROME appeared before the board with regard to this incident and was advised to take more care when shifting ground in races in future,
f) Jockey Kennedy signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he struck the horse ANCIENT ROME more than 12 times with his crop in the entire race. A fine of R1000 was imposed. In assessing the penalty, the board took into account the number of times the crop was used (14) and the fact that he won the race.

THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED:
