THE STARTER REPORTED: a) HIDDEN STRINGS (*X Jacobs) and EYE CATCHING (M Byleveld) jumped awkwardly and thereafter were slow into stride. b) MON CHERIE (G Cheyne) jumped slow, losing two lengths. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Approaching the 1000m, REBELS SPIRIT (*J Solomons) was tightened for galloping room on the inside of EYE CATCHING (M Byleveld). b) EYE CATCHING (M Byleveld) ducked out sharply for no apparent reason leaving the 400m and approaching the 50m. On returning to the saddling area, it was established that the ear muffs fitted to this filly had shifted, partially obscuring the filly's vision in her left eye. The ear muffs were inspected and found to be in good condition. However, this matter was brought to the attention of trainer V H Marshall. c) Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline C on the use of the crop) in that he struck the horse LA QUINTA more than three times on consecutive strides in the latter stages. Jockey van Niekerk signed an Admission of Guilt and was fined R 1000,00. d) AYE AYE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer C Snaith was advised. (SC) e) HIDDEN STRINGS, the third-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer GW Ennion was advised.
