Shortly before the start was effected DAYTONA CHARGER broke through the front gate, was restrained by the rider, returned to the start, inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon, declared fit to race and reloaded. Subsequently WOODY CAPE, who was difficult to load, was scratched by the Veterinary Surgeon. These two incidents caused a delay to the start of this Race. Trainer van Heerden was advised to re-school this gelding prior to its next engagement. STUNNED was slow, losing 2 lengths. The Board reviewed the start of this race and established that shortly before the start was effected WOODY CAPE, in the stall gate number 1, had gone down on its haunches. Simultaneously the hood on DAYTONA CHARGER, in the stall gate number 9, had been removed in anticipation of the start, resulting in this colt breaking through the front gate. The Board was of the opinion that the hood on DAYTONA CHARGER had been removed in good time and that no blame could be apportioned to any individual or horse and therefore took no further action. Approaching the 1600m, DAYTONA CHARGER and TERN UNSTONED were carried out by ARISTOCAT, which shifted out sharply for no apparent reason. STUNNED was hanging out from the 400m. B TWENTY ONE and RACING SOCKS were selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Scratched: GAIN GROUND - retired. WOODY CAPE - injured in pens.
