THE STARTER REPORTED: a) ANOTHER PENNY (S Khumalo), MAGIC DUKE (*J Gates), ROYAL SIEGE (D Schwarz) were slow losing one length. b) GLOBAL DREAMER (*K Matsunyane) jumped awkwardly losing two lengths. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) In view of the performance of ELECTRA FLYING (C Storey) (distance 16,50 lengths, betting 57/20), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine gelding. b) STORMY MOON (C Habib) commenced to give ground to the field from the 500m. c) GLOBAL DREAMER (*K Matsunyane) commenced to give ground to the field from the 300m. d) MAGIC DUKE (*J Gates) raced to the front and compounded from the 300m. When questioned regarding his riding of MAGIC DUKE, Apprentice Gates confirmed his instructions from Trainer A Azzie were to race from the front and maintain a two to three length lead then to save MAGIC DUKE round the turn and allow him to quicken in the straight. However, MAGIC DUKE was having his first run with blinkers which resulted in him racing keener than anticipated and leading by further than they had wanted. Apprentice Gates in conclusion, stated that MAGIC DUKE came under pressure early on in the straight and had faded from the 300m. e) KOOL BAIKAL (G Lerena), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
