UMTHETHO (AUS) was slow into stride. In view of the performance from BOLD MAN, which over-raced in the early stages and compounded in the straight, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. Jockey Penny reported that he felt something amiss with RUSSIAN SAINT in running. When questioned regarding his riding of UMTHETHO (AUS), Jockey Bester told the Stewards that his instructions were to ride this gelding from off the pace, keep him covered for as long as possible and only use the crop as a last resort. Trainer Cason confirmed these instructions and further stated the UMTHETHO (AUS) resents the crop in both his work and races. After considering the statements made and reviewing the patrol film, the Stewards were satisfied that UMTHETHO (AUS) had been raced and ridden on merit and would proceed no further with this line of query. PERFECTUS was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: BOLD MAN - not striding out both front. RUSSIAN SAINT - not striding out both front. BLACK RAKE - mouth injury.
