As the jockeys and horses entered the parade ring, a lightning warning came into effect and as a precautionary measure, the jockeys and horses were recalled until such time as the lightning had cleared, this caused a delay to the start of this Race. FISH RIVER (AUS) was slow into stride. In view of the performance of FREDERICO'S DREAM, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly. Jockey Delpech reported that he felt something amiss with FISH RIVER (AUS) in running. MOVIE SHOW and STAR PROFILE were selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: FISH RIVER (AUS) and FREDERICO'S DREAM examined post race, nothing obvious detected. MELINDA'S GARDEN - abnormal respiratory noise. The course farrier on duty did not report there to be anything amiss with the shoes fitted to the horses that raced at today's race meeting. The passports of all the runners that raced at today's race meeting were checked and their identities, AHS and Equine Influenza vaccinations confirmed. Several Jockeys and Apprentices were selected for breathalyser tests and the taking of urine samples for analysis. DURING THE CANTER DOWN, A LIGHTNING WARNING CAME INTO EFFECT AND HORSES AND RIDERS WERE RECALLED TO THE UNSADDLING AREA AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE. THIS CAUSED A DELAY TO THE START OF THIS RACE. THE ELECTRICAL STORM WHICH MOVED IN OVER THE VAAL RACECOURSE PERSISTED. TIME WAS GIVEN TO ALLOW THE STORM TO PASS. THE LIGHTNING METER CONTINUED TO REGISTER LIGHTNING WARNINGS. THESE WARNINGS PERSISTED AND WHEN VIEWING THE WEATHER SITE USED TO TRACK STORMS, IT APPEARED THAT THIS STORM WAS SET IN AND WAS NOT GOING TO MOVE AWAY. WITH THE CONSTANT WARNING OF LIGHTNING BEING IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE RACECOURSE, A DECISION WAS MADE AT 17H36 TO ABANDON THE REMAINING RACES.
