ROYAL APPLAUSE and GREAT SUCCESS were slow into stride. SECRET MESSENGER and VIRTUOUS lost 1 length. TELEKINESIS was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. As the start was effected, ROYAL APPLAUSE jumped outwards, simultaneously BIG BLUE NIGHT jumped inwards, resulting in SECRET MESSENGER and GREAT SUCCESS becoming cramped for galloping room and having to ease, losing position. Approaching the 350 metre mark, ROYAL RUSTLER shifted outwards slightly from the crop carrying Q BEHIND ME outwards. As a result, BIG BLUE NIGHT, who was racing on the outside of Q BEHIND ME, became baulked for a clear run from the 350 to the 200 metre marks and thereafter was forced to switch inwards for a clear run carrying ROYAL APPLAUSE inwards approaching the 50 metre mark. Apprentice Ngwane, the rider of BIG BLUE NIGHT, appeared before the Board with regard to this incident and was advised to take more care when shifting for a clear run in future. In view of the performances of Q BEHIND ME and SECRET MESSENGER, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine these horses. SECRET MESSENGER raced fitted with alumites. Vet: Q BEHIND ME and SECRET MESSENGER - nothing obvious detected.
