THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) CELTILLUS (A Marcus) was hanging in in the straight. b) RUBY RHYTHM (A Andrews) was momentarily inconvenienced when close to the heels of MELIORA (*X Jacobs) which rolled out slightly at the 150m. c) Trainer GR Puller was questioned with regards to the instructions given to Apprentice X Jacobs, the rider of MELIORA. In this regard he told the stewards that the filly had drawn 9 out of 9 in today's race and had to carry 61.5 kg's. When studying the form of other runners, which he felt would more than likely race to the lead or race very handy, he was concerned the filly would be caught out wide if ridden forward in the early stages. Therefore he had instructed Apprentice Jacobs to race from off the pace in order to conserve energy in the early stages. Trainer Puller's explanation was noted. d) Jockey K de Melo, the rider of SMART WILLIAM, reported that this gelding took no interest in the running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. e) RED LARK, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer WA Nel was advised.
