SHIRLEY VALENTINE, KOMESHANS FLIGHT, MAYFAIR and IN CLOVER (AUS) lost one length. MARK MY CARD lost three lengths. IDEAL WINTER was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. MAYFAIR over-raced in the early and middle stages, was hanging out on the bend and raced wide from the 1400 metre mark. INTO THE GROOVE was switched out for a clear run approaching the 300 metre mark and thereafter was switched in for a clear run near the 250 metre mark. INTO THE GROOVE was then continuously baulked for a clear run between the 200 and 50 metre marks. CRYSTAL BALL was inconvenienced on the outside of IN CLOVER (AUS) near the 100 metre mark. Jockey Lerena, the rider of MAYFAIR, and Mr Campbell, the trainer of this mare, appeared before the Board with regard to the running and riding of MAYFAIR. Jockey Lerena explained that his instructions were to race this mare with cover from a wide draw. With the slow pace that prevailed and this mare not being able to obtain cover, she over-raced and as a result did not run on when encouraged. Trainer Campbell when questioned confirmed these instructions. Given the slow pace that prevailed in the early and middle stages of this Race, the Board was satisfied with these explanations. In view of the performances of MAYFAIR and CRYSTAL BALL, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine these horses. INGA returned post race having cast the right fore shoe. Vet: MAYFAIR and CRYSTAL BALL - nothing obvious detected. INGA - lame left hind. MARK MY CARD and OSPREY - coughing.
