THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Whilst being loaded, RED EIGHT (S Mbhele) put its head over the left side partition and had to be corrected by the handler. b) ALASKAN NIGHT (A Marcus) and DESTRUCTION BOY (O Noach) were restless in the stalls. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) At the 900m, RED EIGHT (S Mbhele) grabbed the bit on one side, took charge of the rider, hung out badly to the outside running rail and could not be assisted thereafter. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. As this is the second occasion that this gelding has behaved in this manner, Trainer VH Marshall has been advised that RED EIGHT has been suspended indefinitely in terms of Rule 93.2.5 and until such time as this gelding gallops on a racecourse with a companion to the satisfaction of the stewards. b) MATTHEW THE KING (G Cheyne) was hanging out in the latter stages. c) GAINSFORD, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer VH Marshall was advised.
