Stall gate draw 5 was left empty due to a technical problem with the back gates. TROPICAL HIBISCUS broke through the front gate was immediately restrained, returned to the start and reloaded. EXCLAMATION and GREY MISTRESS was slow losing one length and thereafter were slow into stride. Jockey van Niekerk was charged with a contravention (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he used his crop with excessive frequency whilst riding the horse KAWAKAMI. In view of the report from the Starter regarding TROPICAL HIBISCUS, Trainer Kruyer was advised to have this filly re-schooled before her next engagement. Apprentice Burke, rider of EXCLAMATION reported that this filly made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine the filly on her return to the unsaddling enclosure and submit a report. Jockey Herholdt, rider of DUCKY FUZZ reported that this filly did not act in the underfoot conditions. In view of the performance from this filly the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine the filly on her return to the unsaddling enclosure and submit a report. ROCKET GIRL was hanging out on the bend and Jockey Byleveld reported that this filly did not act in the going. After the running of this race a protest was lodged by the Jockeys regarding the underfoot conditions. Evidence was taken from two jockeys, two trainers and the Track Manager regarding this protest. The Jockeys were of the opinion that whilst the going on the back straight was heavy the bend underfoot conditions were inconsistent and affected the horses' actions and therefore was a source of danger. After deliberation the Panel were unanimously of the opinion that due to conditions on the bend there was an increased risk to both horse and rider and therefore the race meeting was abandoned. KAWAKAMI was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: TROPICAL HIBISCUS - returned bleeding from mouth due to injury. DUCKY FUZZ and EXCLAMATION - examined post race and no obvious abnormalities were detected.
