BURNT ROCK was slow into stride. BONAIRE over-raced in the early stages and was hanging in throughout. BURNT ROCK was carried outwards by POMACEOUS which was shifting outwards away from the crop in the closing stages, which resulted in SHINE LIKE A STAR becoming momentarily baulked shortly before the finish. Jockey Devoy, rider of TITUS and Trainer Strydom were questioned regarding the Jockey Devoy's ride on this gelding. Jockey Devoy explained that this gelding was hanging inwards badly in the home straight and was proving difficult to assist, he further explain that due to this gelding's history of unsoundness, he elected not to give this gelding a hard run. Trainer Strydom stated that he normally doesn't give specific instructions to Jockey's especially to an experienced Jockey like Mr Devoy. He cited that this was the second run after a very long rest, which was due to the unsoundness of this gelding. He also stated that in his view, the distance in today's race was too short and he was satisfied with Mr Devoy's ride. Having heard the evidence, the Board noted these statements and in view of this, the Board requested the Course Veterinary Surgeon to examine TITUS. The Trainer was requested to report back on the circumstances of this gelding upon returning to the stables. POMACEOUS was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: LEAD MAN - lame right fore. POMACEOUS - cast right fore shoe. BURNT ROCK - lame left fore. TITUS - examined post race, mild warm off hind joint and no obvious lameness.
