SAN FERMIN (AUS) was slow into stride. Leaving the 150m, AGAINST THE GRAIN was buffeted between WHITEHAVEN which rolled out and SAN FERMIN (AUS) which rolled in. As a consequence of this, all three of these horses, became unbalanced. SAN FERMIN (AUS) was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. SMOKE raced with a tongue tie on. Vet: SMOKE - abnormal respiratory noise. Scratched: RAASMAAL (AUS) - lame left front. Following the running of race 4, an electrical storm moved in over the Vaal Racecourse. At 15h40 there was a protest lodged by a member of the Stipendiary Board in regards to the overhead weather conditions which included severe lightning and significant rain which had fallen since the running of race 4. A panel was constituted which consisted of the Phumelela raceday representative, two stipendiary stewards and the NHA Veterinary Surgeon. The panel heard evidence from the stipendiary steward who lodged the protest, two trainers and two jockeys. All parties which gave evidence were of the opinion that due to the current overhead conditions as well as the forecast for continued thunder showers, the racemeeting could not continue. The panel was also unanimous that the racemeeting could not continue and the remainder of the racemeeting (races 5 - 10) were abandoned.
