EIGHTY FOUR and GOLD GRIFFIN lost one length. WAQAAS (AUS) and ITQAAN reared in the stalls. BLESSINGTON cast its right front shoe in running. FLAPJACK was hanging in from the 400m. Jockey Khumalo reported that BLESSINGTON made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. OISTINS was hanging in badly from the 200m proving difficult to assist and thereafter Jockey Danielson did not persevere with his ride from the 100m. In view of this report, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. WAQAAS (AUS) was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: BLESSINGTON - no respiratory noise detected post-race. OISTINS - examined post race, nothing obvious detected. WAQAAS (AUS) - stirrup rub left side. Scratched: IT MUST BE FATE - retired. Following the running of race 3, an electrical storm moved in over the Vaal racecourse. At 16h15 there was a protest lodged by a member of the stipendiary board with regards to the severe lightning overhead. A panel was constituted which consisted of the Phumelela raceday representative, two Stipendiary Stewards and the NHA Veterinary Surgeon. The panel heard evidence from the stipendiary steward who lodged the protest, two trainers and two jockeys. All parties which gave evidence were of the opinion that due to the lightning as well as the forecast for continued lightning and thunder showers, the racemeeting could not continue. Consideration was also given to time constraints to complete the remainder of the races due to the fading light. The panel was also unanimous that the race meeting could not continue and the remainder of the race meeting (races 4 - 8) were abandoned.
