GIMME KATRINA and POPINJAY were slow away and lost 1 length respectively. JOKING was slow into stride. TSESSEBE, CANDY CRUSH and DISTANT CALL were nervous in the stalls. SHEPARD'S DELIGHT was nervous in the stalls, slow away and lost 1 length. At the time of final declarations, Trainers Strydom and McKenzie approached the Stipendiary Board requesting permission for their respective horses WHO KNOWS and BUSHY PARK to be declared without Riders in the race card as, there were no Riders available. The Stipendiary Board in deciding whether to grant permission, sought to balance the interests of the owners and trainer involved with the horses in question and the needs of the betting public. In this regard, the Board was of the view that, it would be in the best interests of racing to allow the horses to be declared without Riders in order to afford the trainers and owners every possible opportunity to have a runner, in the event of another horse being scratched and/or a Rider becoming available subsequently. However, the Board was also of the view that if at 10:28 on the race day, that is, two minutes prior to the final declarations being disseminated, if there were still no Riders available the horses would be scratched. As can be gleaned from the race card changes below, Jockeys Steyn and Bogaleboile became available thus allowing each of the horses to run in this race. Jockey Yeni, rider of JOKING and Apprentice Mphanya, rider of KILLALA reported that their respective mounts were not striding out freely in running. At approximately the 200m, WHO KNOWS shifted in sharply when awkwardly placed between TRAVEL IN STYLE which was hanging in and POPINJAY which shifted out away from the crop. After reviewing this incident, the Board was satisfied that blame could not be apportioned to any individual Rider, therefore deemed this to be a racing incident and took no further action. GIMME KATRINA was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. STRAWBERRY GIRL raced with alumites behind and unshod in front. Vet: JOKING - not striding out left fore. KILLALA - not striding out left hind and speedy cut left hind. WHO KNOWS - not striding out left hind.
