While the field was at the start, there was a lightning strike in close proximity to the racecourse which set off the lightning alert on the acu-weather lightning detection system. As a result of this, the boardroom radioed the start and gave the jockeys the option of returning to the saddling area or to race back. The Jockeys chose to race back. As a result of this, this race jumped thirty seconds ahead of schedule. The decision was made in consultation with the racing operator and in the best interests and welfare of all parties at the start. CALS CRUSH was hanging in from the 300m. LA BELLA MIA was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. A lightning storm moved in over Turffontein Racecourse and following a fifty-minute delay and with no sign of the storm dissipating, a panel was formed to hear a protest lodged by a member of the Stipendiary Board with regards to racing continuing. After hearing his evidence as well as the evidence from the two trainer and jockey representatives, the panel was of the unanimous decision that due to the fading light and the persistent lightning strikes, that races 8 and 9 could not be run and therefore abandoned them.
