PETRONI VINI was slow, losing 1 length. THE RUSSIAN SAILOR was slow, losing 2 lengths. WRITTEN IN STONE cast its right hind shoe in running. Jockey Dererem, rider of WRITTEN IN STONE and Jockey Habib, rider of INSIDE POLITICS reported that their respective mounts made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. In view of the performance from THE FORERUNNER, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this colt. Due to both the NHA Veterinary Surgeons attending to UNION CASTLE, which had collapsed, they were unable to examine this colt. Trainer Peter was requested to report back on the condition of THE FORERUNNER on return to stables. When afforded the opportunity to expand on the poor performance of THE FORERUNNER, Jockey Kennedy explained to the Board that this colt had jumped well, raced in a handy position (according to his instructions), travelled well into the straight, however, shortly thereafter THE FORERUNNER'S stride had shortened, which resulted in it taking a number of awkward strides and began to fade. As a consequence of this he did not persevere with his ride. At approximately the 400m HIGHWAY EXPRESS and UNION CASTLE came together and brushed. In the pull-up area UNION CASTLE collapsed, dislodging Jockey Munger. As Jockey Munger was being attended to by the course medical staff, this precluded him from being weighed in. The Board deemed his weight to be correct. STREAKING STAR was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. FOURSIXSIXFOUR raced in Club colours (blue, black cap) Stewards permission. Vet: PETRONI VINI - abnormal respiratory noise. WRITTEN IN STONE and INSIDE POLITICS - no respiratory noise detected post-race. UNION CASTLE - broke down left front. Humanely euthanased. Specimens collected for analysis. Scratched: MARSHALL FOCH - off feed. The course Veterinary Surgeon attended to UNION CASTLE in the pull-up area where this colt collapsed after the running of race 4. The runners and riders for race 5 could not be sent to the start until UNION CASTLE had finished receiving treatment and the track was cleared. Subsequently OPERETTA lifted its left front shoe en route to the start, which was attended to by the Course Farrier. These incidents caused a delay to the running of race 5.
