AUTUMN ANNIE was rushed to the front from a wide draw and compounded in the straight. In view of this report, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this mare. Jockey Bester, rider of AUTUMN ANNIE appeared before the Board and was afforded the opportunity to place on record any factors which, in his opinion, would have contributed to AUTUMN ANNIE'S poor performance. He explained to the Board that his instructions were to race to the front and allow this mare to lead; however, AUTUMN ANNIE had not shown the anticipated early pace and had to be encouraged along to find a lead. Jockey Bester was of the view that these early exertions had resulted in AUTUMN ANNIE failing to produce any kind of finish. The Board noted Jockey Bester's explanation, which was corroborated by the patrol film of the race. VINTAGE TUNE was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
