HOWL cast the left fore shoe, which the farrier replaced at the start, causing a delay. SHOSHANA was slow losing one length and thereafter was slow into stride. SHE'S A VISION fly jumped as the start was affected. Jockey Fourie, rider of EVEING SONG reported that he felt something amiss with this filly in running. LABYRINTH raced green. SHE'S A VISION and SHOSHANA brushed at the 250m. When question regard the improved performance from KATHLEEN today, compared to her first run on 14 May 2019, Assistant Trainer McLachlan, who acted on behalf of Trainer Kotzen, told the Stewards that she had been very restless in the stalls, had reared and returned after her race with a loose tooth and blood in her mouth. He also stated that her first run was well below her potential she had shown in work, and had returned to the stable sound the following day. The Board reviewed the patrol films of 14 May 2019 and confirmed Mr McLachlan's evidence regarding the start and noted that after the filly had been slow away, she was ridden forward by Mr Winnaar from the start to the 700m and thereafter he had drawn his crop and used it on the filly going through the 600m. She, however, did not respond to this and commenced to give ground to the field from the 400m despite the efforts from the rider. Based on the patrol film evidence it would appear that this filly was affected by possible injury in the starting stalls, and therefore produced a below par performance. Her future performances will be monitored. KATHLEEN was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: HOWL - cast left fore shoe, which was replaced at the start, examined and declared fit to race. HOWL - returned having cast the left fore shoe in running, and was blowing. SHOSHANA - returned cut on the right hind, EVENING SONG - examined post-race and no obvious abnormalities were detected.
