The start of this race was delayed due to technical problems experienced in the boardroom and compounded when GOLDEN SPIRAL and UFO broke through the front gates of their stalls. UFO dislodged its rider, however, was restrained by the handler, returned to the start, inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon and subsequently scratched. GOLDEN SPIRAL was restrained by its rider, returned to the start, inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon and declared fit to race. Subsequent to this incident there were further technical problems experienced in the boardroom and whilst the technical problems experienced were being resolved, all the horses were taken out of the starting stalls and later reloaded. During the loading process GOLDEN SPIRAL became restless and broke through the front gate, resulting in UFO breaking through and dislodging its rider. GOLDEN SPIRAL and UFO were returned to the start and inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon. GOLDEN SPIRAL was declared fit to race and reloaded. The starting stalls certificate for GOLDEN SPIRAL was withdrawn. SENECA FALLS was slow into stride. LONELY NIGHT lost 3 lengths and thereafter was slow into stride. Trainer Mahiakola was advised to re-school this filly prior to its next engagement. In view of the Starter's report with regard to GOLDEN SPIRAL, this filly was suspended for a period of 7 days and until re-certified tractable with a companion. GOLDEN SPIRAL may not be presented for re-passing during this period. ILLEGAL took an awkward stride at approximately the 150m. Jockeys Danielson, Khumalo, Kennedy and Byleveld reported that they felt something amiss with their respective mounts in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine LADY LEXINGTON, AMANIKA, JUST A GREETING and ILLEGAL. An inquiry was opened into Apprentice Juglall's riding of EMPRESS ROCK in the concluding stages. BID BEFORE SUNSET was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: LADY LEXINGTON, AMANIKA and JUST A GREETING - examined post-race, nothing obvious detected. BID BEFORE SUNSET - abnormal respiratory noise. ILLEGAL - not striding out right front. EMPRESS ROCK - coughing. Scratched: UFO - injured in the stalls.
