THE STARTER REPORTED: a) AZURA (J Smitsdorff) jumped slow, losing two lengths. b) FLASHLIGHT (O Noach) was slow into stride. c) FUSILLADE (G van Niekerk) was restless in the stalls and thereafter slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) At the 200m FLY TO RIO (R Khathi) shifted in away from FUSILLADE (G van Niekerk) which was hanging in from the 400m. b) Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M and Guideline C on the use of the crop) in that he struck FUSILLADE more than 12 times in the entire race and on more than 3 occasions on consecutive strides in the concluding stages. Jockey G van Niekerk signed an admission of guilt and was fined R2000,00. c) In view of the performance of AZURA (J Smitsdorff), which trailed the field throughout, the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this filly. d) Jockey A Marcus, the rider of GRANNY'S MOON, (Betting 27/4 ; Distance 7.90) reported that this filly took no interest in the running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. e) Jockey M Winnaar, the rider of SUNLIT PATH, reported that this filly changed stride continually in the running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. f) FLASHLIGHT, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer GV Woodruff was advised.
