THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) TRIP TO AFRICA (*T Gumede) shifted in, in the concluding stages. b) Jockey M Yeni reported that FARLAND (14.75 lengths) did not stride out freely in the running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. c) In view of the performance of PATHS OF VICTORY (S Khumalo) (17.35 lengths, 16/1 in the betting) the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. d) Jockey M Yeni appeared before the Board and was questioned with regard to his ride on FARLAND in this race. Mr Yeni explained that this gelding has a history of over-racing, and that today FARLAND, after obtaining cover in the initial stages, had over-raced, was difficult to assist and tended to hang out. Thereafter, once racing without cover, this gelding had improved around the field to race in a forward position. This was confirmed by the patrol video of the race. In the early part of the straight, after having encouraged FARLAND briefly, this gelding had felt awkward in its action, began to lose ground to the field, and as a result he did not persevere with his ride thereafter. The Board noted Mr Yeni's explanation and he was advised to ride his mounts with sufficient vigour in future so as to leave no room for query from the Stewards. e) CROWN TOWERS (AUS) (R Fourie), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer S J Snaith advised (ML). f) TRIP TO AFRICA (*T Gumede), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer D C Howells advised (SC).
