THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) AISLING (S Khumalo) was fractious in the stalls.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED :
a) SKY GLITTER (E Ngwane) jumped on terms however, gave ground to the field between the 1000m and 600m. Thereafter, this filly finished its race off strongly.
Jockey E Ngwane appeared before the Board with regard to the above report and was questioned regarding his ride on SKY GLITTER with particular reference to his lack of vigour between the 1000m and 500m. Jockey E Ngwane explained to the Board that his instructions on this filly were to allow her to find her feet early and not bustle her. Consequently, after SKY GLITTER jumped on terms with the field, he elected to ride her with restraint as per his instructions. However, despite him gently encouraging his mount in the early and middle stages, this filly was unable to keep pace with the field and gave ground. He was further of the view that, approaching the 400m, when he asked SKY GLITTER to finish the race, its strong finishing burst was as a result of his conservative early ride.
Additionally, Trainer Gareth van Zyl appeared before the Board with regard to his riding instructions of SKY GLITTER. In this regard, he explained to the Board that as this was SKY GLITTER's first run, he did not know what to expect from this filly and therefore gave 2 sets of instructions. The first of which was that if this filly was in touch with the field , to keep her balanced, in touch and let her finish her race off strongly. Alternatively, if she was out of her ground, to not bustle her and let her run on to the finish. The Board noted the explanations of both Jockey E Ngwane and Trainer Gareth van Zyl and has adjourned to review the patrol films of this race and to assess the ride.
b) In view of the performance of HIGH HOSANNA (9.75 lengths, 9/4 in the betting) the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine.
c) SOUND OF WARNING (L Hewitson), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer S G Tarry advised (ML).
