THE STARTER REPORTED
A) MENDOCINO and SCENTED GARDEN were slow into stride.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED
A) DELICASEA (C Maujean) took a number of awkward strides from the 400m.
B) RACINE (X Ndlovu) was hanging in from the 300m. Thereafter, Jockey X Ndlovu (RACINE) accidentally dropped his crop at the 100m.
C) In view of the performance of SUGAR GUM (L Hewitson) (distance 5.75 - betting 10/13) the Course Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine.
D) LA BELLA MIA (M V'Rensburg) had to be led to the start. As Trainer G D Smith had been placed on notice on the 26th of March 2021 that this mare had not proceeded to the start mounted by her rider, this mare has now been suspended in terms of Rule 93.2.4 until such time as she proceeds to the start to the satisfaction of the Stewards.
E) SUGAR GUM (L Hewitson) raced prominently and weakened suddenly in the closing stages. When questioned regarding the performance of SUGAR GUM, Jockey L Hewitson told the Stewards that the filly had felt like she was under pressure and did not feel comfortable in having to race at her optimum speed, due to the fractions that were being set by her competitors. When questioned, Trainer G D Smith supported the view expressed by Jockey L Hewitson and confirmed that the filly is better when able to run on and close the race off strongly. When questioned regarding the performance of LA BELLA MIA, Trainer G D Smith told the Stewards that this 6-year-old mare is nearing the end of her racing career and that she has been a consistent performer with the exception of the race on 26 March 2021, which he was unable to explain. He added that even though he had been disappointed with the performance of SUGAR GUM, that LA BELLA MIA (M V'Rensburg) had won the race had not come as a surprise to him as she had been a strong performer, albeit with a few quirks, as mares in his opinion tend to exhibit. As a Veterinary inspection of SUGAR GUM showed no abnormalities, Trainer G D Smith was advised to report back to the Stewards on the condition of this filly on return to the stables.
F) The winner LA BELLA MIA was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis, Trainer G D Smith advised (LM).
