THE STARTER REPORTED: a) TARA ITI (C Zackey) jumped inwards, made contact with TALES OF US (J Smitsdorff) which, in turn, made contact with CHASING MAVERICKS (C Bantam). THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) CAPE POINT (A Andrews) took an awkward stride at the 1400m. b) EXCEEDER (G Behr) was held up for a clear run at the 250m and thereafter was hanging out in the latter stages. c) When questioned regarding his riding of UNIVERSE BOSS, Jockey C Murray told the stewards that this gelding had lacked early pace, despite his efforts to secure a handier position. Leaving the 600m he had directed this gelding to the outside of the field on the latter part of the bend in an attempt to make up some ground. Under a vigorous ride this gelding had shifted both ways away from the crop approaching the 200m and had only responded to his urgings in the latter stages. d) Jockey C Murray was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking UNIVERSE BOSS more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey Murray signed an admission of guilt and was fined R2000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account Jockey Murray's recent record in relation to this Rule, the distance over and manner in which Jockey Murray used his crop and the number of strikes (16) over the permissible level. e) In view of the performance of KID COLT (X Carstens), which gave ground to the field from the 600m, the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this colt. f) ASSERTIVE POWER, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer C Snaith, acting on behalf of Trainer SJ Snaith, was advised.
