THE STARTER REPORTED: a) IZAPHA (G van Niekerk) jumped slow, losing one length and thereafter was slow into stride. b) PICTURE THE MOMENT (S Mbhele) jumped awkwardly, losing one length and thereafter was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) In view of the performance of MATTHEW THE KING (G Cheyne) the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this colt. b) Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking IZAPHA more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey Van Niekerk signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account Jockey Van Niekerk's recent record in relation to this Rule, the distance over and manner in which Jockey Van Niekerk used his crop and the number of strikes (13) over the permissible level. c) MOON ROCK, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer PD Reeves was advised. (SC) d) IZAPHA, the second-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer WA Nel was advised.
