THE STARTER REPORTED
A) DANILO was nervous in the stalls and slow into stride.
B) SOMERSET MAUGHAM, STORM COMMANDER and VIRTUOSA were stubborn loading.
C) BOLD STRIKE was slow away.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED
A) Shortly after the start, VIRTUOSA (M Mjoka) was awkwardly placed between STORM COMMANDER (S Naidoo) and LITTLE DRUMMER BOY (E Webber) which jumped inwards.
B) STORM COMMANDER (S Naidoo) over-raced in early stages.
C) BOLD STRIKE (J Mphanya) was hanging in from the 300m.
D) At approximately the 200m, DANILO (X Ndlovu) had to switch out to continue its run.
E) In view of the performance of SOMERSET MAUGHAM (F Herholdt) (distance 1.60 - betting 5/10) the Course Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine.
Jockey F Herholdt appeared before the Board and afforded the opportunity to explain what his instructions were, as well as any factors which may have led to SOMERSET MAUGHAM's poor performance. He explained to the Board his instructions were to place this gelding in midfield with cover. He added that he had him in a perfect position turning for home and as the field entered the straight, the gelding had dropped the bit and he had to work hard on him to get him going in the straight. The gelding only started to sustain a strong finish in the last 150m, which was far too late for him to be competitive. Jockey F Herholdt's instructions were confirmed by Assistant Trainer C Snaith.
F) The winner VIRTUOSA was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis, Trainer J V A Strydom advised (LM).
When questioned regarding the improved performance of VIRTUOSA, Trainer Strydom explained to the Board that he had fitted blinkers on this filly for today's race which may have accounted for the improved performance. Trainer J V A Strydom undertook to race this filly similarly equipped where possible in future.

B) SH BOOM raced equipped with ear muffs (10:32 - 08/07/2021).
