THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) EDGARTOWN (S Moodley) and CALLMETHEHEADLINE (*R Venniker) over-raced in the early stages. b) PACIFIC WORLD (*T Gumede) led the field in the early and middle stages. Thereafter, this gelding compounded from the 600m. In view of this report, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. c) At the 450m, PETECA (K Sakayi) was carried out by SAFE RETURN (S Veale) which, raced awkwardly throughout and, shifted out to continue its run. d) Apprentice R Venniker (CALLTHEHEADLINE) completed a satisfactory qualifying ride. e) Jockey S Veale signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read in conjunction with Guideline M, in that he misused his crop by striking the horse SAFE RETURN more than 12 times in the entire race. In assessing penalty, the Board considered the number of times (14) Jockey S Veale struck the horse SAFE RETURN, the distance over which and manner in which he used his crop, the fact that he won the race and his record (0) in relation to this Rule. Accordingly, a penalty of R1000 was imposed. f) SAFE RETURN (S Veale), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer V H Marshall advised (ML).
