THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Approaching the 200m SHINNECOCK (S Khumalo), which was hanging in, was tightened for galloping room between NEGREANU (F Herholdt) and DOUBLE CHARGE (G van Niekerk) and then had to be steadied when close to the heels of DOUBLE CHARGE (G van Niekerk) which shifted in slightly away from the crop and had to be straightened. b) In view of the performance of NEGREANU (F Herholdt) the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. c) Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking DOUBLE CHARGE more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey G van Niekerk signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account Jockey G van Niekerk's recent record in relation to this Rule, the distance over and manner in which Jockey G van Niekerk used his crop and the number of strikes (13) over the permissible level. d) TICKET TO RIDE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer GW Ennion was advised. (MB) e) DOUBLE CHARGE, the second-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer WA Nel was advised.
