THE STARTER REPORTED: a) MISS QUINCE (K de Melo) lost 1 length. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) TASHNI (S Moodley) was ridden aggressively from a deep draw in order to obtain the lead at the 700m. b) Between the 900m and 700m, SHIELD MAIDEN (A Marcus) had to be restrained off heels on a number of occasions. c) FIAMETTA (N Patel) raced wide into the straight. Thereafter, Jockey N Patel dropped his crop at the 350m. d) AUTUMN SPIRIT (A Mgudlwa) was hanging in from the 400m. e) Jockey K de Melo reported that the bit on MISS QUINCE pulled through its mouth in the running. Thereafter, Trainer R Hill confirmed that this filly returned post-race with the bit pulled completely through and that the bridle had slipped significantly. f) In the concluding stages, when racing in tight-quarters with SHIELD MAIDEN (A Marcus), Jockey M Yeni (REGINAS ANGEL) was struck by Jockey A Marcus's crop. g) Apprentice S Njokwe reported that QUITO did not stride out freely in the running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. h) Jockey M Yeni (REGINAS ANGEL) appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding the non-vigorous nature of his ride between the 400m and 150m. In this regard, he explained that, in the running REGINAS ANGEL had been positioned on the outside of the leader during which time, the pace of the race was faster than he would have preferred. Consequently, when entering the straight, he elected to hold his mount together for as long as reasonably possible in order to ensure that this filly did not weaken in the straight in a similar manner to the leader. Additionally, Jockey M Yeni explained that moving through the 250m, the winner SCENT OF A WOMAN (*T Gumede) had travelled better than his mount and moved away from it. Consequently, he accepted he could not win the race and therefore, rode REGINAS ANGEL to obtain the best possible placing, that is, second place. He further explained that, despite this filly enjoying being ridden with the hands, his riding was further compromised by REGINAS ANGEL's tendency to hang in, in the straight. The Board noted the explanation of Jockey M Yeni which was corroborated by the patrol films of the race. i) SCENT OF A WOMAN (*T Gumede), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
