THE STARTER REPORTED: a) DA CAPO (C Zackey) was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) LIFE GOES ON (W Kennedy) was hanging out between the 600m and 400m. b) Approaching the 200m, SOLICITOR GENERAL (J Gates) was bumped inwards by KNIGHT WARRIOR (G Wright) which shifted in suddenly away from the crop when it raced on the outside running rail. Immediately thereafter, SOLICITOR GENERAL (J Gates) had to be steadied for a number of strides when awkwardly placed on the heels of MAMMA'S BOY (*M Ntuli) which shifted out gradually away from the crop. Jockey M Ntuli the rider of MAMMA'S BOY appeared before the Board and was advised that while there were circumstances surrounding this incident, he is obliged to ensure that he keeps his mounts on a straight course to prevent any tightening of runners in the future. c) DIEDI (S Veale) was hanging in, in the concluding stages. d) Jockey M V'Rensburg appeared before the Board and was questioned with regard to the non-vigorous nature of his ride on RAINBOW RISING between the 400m and 200m. In this regard, he explained that his instructions were to ride this gelding 'cold'. Consequently, after RAINBOW RISING travelled strongly, he had elected to ride this horse with the hands and track runners, before switching his mount into clear running and allowing it to produce a final, what he expected to be, winning effort. When he had switched RAINBOW RISING in and asked this gelding to finish its race off strongly, it failed to produce the finishing effort he had expected. Trainer Gareth van Zyl also appeared before the Board and confirmed his instructions to Jockey M V'Rensburg. The Board noted the explanation of Jockey M V'Rensburg and advised Trainer Gareth van Zyl and Jockey M V'Rensburg that should they choose to race horses similarly in future, the Stipendiary Board must be informed prior to the race. e) Assistant Trainer L Karriem acting on behalf of Trainer Gareth van Zyl signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 39.7.5 in that he failed to vaccinate the horses LESLIES PATHTOFAME against Equine Influenza in accordance with the programme of vaccination as published from time to time in the Racing Calendar. Accordingly, a penalty of a fine of R1000 was imposed. f) WHAT A RYDER (K de Melo), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
