THE STARTER REPORTED: a) FLY OVER (C Bantam) and SAINT WEST (M Winnaar) made contact shortly after the start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) FLY OVER (C Bantam) proved difficult to settle in the early stages. b) Approaching the 300m Jockey R Fourie hesitated with his riding and directed MELIORA to the outside of SAINT WEST (M Winnaar) when SAINT WEST (M Winnaar) rolled in slightly. c) Jockey R Fourie was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking MELIORA more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey R Fourie signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account Jockey Fourie's recent record in relation to this Rule, the distance over and manner in which Jockey Fourie used his crop and the number of strikes (13) over the permissible level. d) MELIORA, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer GR Puller was advised.
