THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) Fair start.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED :
a) IMBEJEJE (D Dillon) took an awkward stride leaving the starting stalls.
b) In the straight, YATA (G Wright) was unable to fully secure clear running on a number of occasions which rendered Jockey G Wright unable to fully test this filly.
c) In the concluding stages, DEMIGOD (W Kennedy) was momentarily inconvenienced off the heels of IMBEJEJE (D Dillon). As a result of this incident, Jockey W Kennedy was unable to fully assist this filly to the finish.
d) Jockey A Arries reported that VISION OF WILL did not stride out freely in the running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine.
e) Jockey W Kennedy appeared before the Board and was questioned with regard to the timing with which he elected to draw his crop whilst riding DEMIGOD in the straight. The Board explained to Jockey W Kennedy that with his normal pattern of strong riding with the hands and as horses begin to quicken between the 300m and 250m, he usually draws his crop to ensure that his mounts go through fully with the effort. However, in this race, he elected to ride DEMIGOD with the hands until the 150m at which point he only then drew his crop to assist this filly. Whilst the Board was satisfied with Jockey W Kennedy's ride overall, it requested clarity on the reason for the deviation from his normal pattern of riding. In this regard, Jockey W Kennedy explained that, his instructions were to ride this filly conservatively, with his hands and to use his crop as late as possible as, this filly was having its first run since April 21. Consequently, in the run, he gave DEMIGOD a strong hand ride until the concluding stages. Additionally, he explained that in the straight he had not secured the clearest of passages which impacted the timing of him drawing his crop. Trainer G H van Zyl also appeared before the Board and confirmed the riding instructions to Mr W Kennedy. The Board noted the explanation of Jockey W Kennedy and Trainer G H van Zyl and advised them that should they have knowledge of a potential change in the manner in which horses are ridden, this must be disclosed to the Stipendiary Board prior to the ride in question.
f) Jockey D Dillon signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read in conjunction with Guideline M, in that he misused his crop by striking the horse IMBEJEJE more than 12 times in the entire race. In assessing penalty, the Board considered the number of times (13) Jockey D Dillon struck the horse IMBEJEJE, the distance over which and manner in which he used his crop, the fact that he won the race and his record (0) in relation to this Rule. Accordingly, a penalty of a fine of R1000 was imposed.
g) Jockey A Arries signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read in conjunction with Guideline M, in that he misused his crop by striking the horse VISION OF WILL more than 12 times in the entire race. In assessing penalty, the Board considered the number of times (13) Jockey A Arries struck the horse VISION OF WILL, the distance over which and manner in which he used his crop and his record (1) in relation to this Rule. Accordingly, a penalty of a fine of R750 was imposed.
h) IMBEJEJE (D Dillon), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer J Buckler acting on behalf of Trainer G S Kotzen advised (DA).
