THE STARTER REPORTED: a) EUROPEANA (S Mbhele) was slow into stride. b) RISING FENIX (K de Melo) was restless in the stalls. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) FLY TO RIO (C Bantam) over raced in the early stages. b) RISING FENIX (K de Melo) was hanging out throughout. c) Jockey L Tarentaal, the rider of BAD REPUTATION, reported this filly made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. d) Jockey O Noach was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking VERONIQUE more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey Noach signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account Jockey Noach's recent record in relation to this Rule, the distance over and manner in which Jockey Noach used his crop and the number of strikes (15) over the permissible level. e) SYMPHONY OF LIGHT, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer C Bass-Robinson was advised.
