THE STARTER REPORTED: a) COMMAND CONTROL (D Dillon) was restless in the stalls, removed, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to race. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) KAPEN PRIDE (K de Melo) was unable to secure clear running in the straight. b) In view of the performances of DON'T TOUCH ME (*T Gumede) (3.60 lengths, 6/1 in the betting) and PREDATOR (M Yeni) (4.00 lengths, 8/1 in the betting) the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. c) Leaving the 300m, IBUTHO (B Jacobson) shifted out to continue its run and thereafter this gelding, which finished its race off strongly, was hanging in, in the concluding stages. Jockey B Jacobson appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding : 1. his decision to change tactics and drop IBUTHO in from its deep draw in comparison to its usually handy racing pattern, 2. the urgency whilst riding this gelding between the 400m and 250m and 3. his decision not to take the available run between PREDATOR (M Yeni) and COMMAND CONTROL (D Dillon) at the 300m. In this regard, Jockey B Jacobson explained to the Board that :- 1. Change of tactics His instruction was to drop this gelding in from a deep draw. 2. Urgency between the 400m and 250m When he rides this gelding at work, he learned that this horse runs its best when allowed to quicken under the hands, build into the race and then produce its final finishing burst. Consequently, in this race, he elected to ride IBUTHO as he does in work which resulted in, in his opinion, the improved performance of this gelding today. 3. Decision not to take the run between PREDATOR (M Yeni) and COMMAND CONTROL (D Dillon) at the 300m He anticipated Jockey M Yeni moving out and the gap closing. He further explained that he was particularly mindful of obtaining a clear run where he had no danger of being inconvenienced in the running as, this gelding does quicken when allowed to build and if inconvenienced, it struggles to regain its momentum. Assistant Trainer K Wright appeared before the Board and confirmed Jockey B Jacobson's feedback to the Board as stated above. The Board noted the explanation of Assistant Trainer K Wright and Jockey B Jacobson, however, advised both parties that should they elect to change tactics on any of their runners, the Stipendiary Board must be advised prior to the running of the race. d) COMMAND CONTROL (D Dillon), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
