THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) COUNTRY FAIR (S Moodley) lost 1 length.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED :
a) In the concluding stages, WINTER JOURNEY (T Godden) and VIRUNGA (D De Gouveia) were carried out by NEW ORLEANS (S Veale) which rolled out and was immediately straightened.
b) Jockey A Marcus appeared before the Board and was afforded the opportunity to place on record any factors that contributed to SKY GLITTER running below betting expectations. The Board, in particular queried with Mr Marcus what his riding tactics were from draw 14. In this regard, Jockey A Marcus stated that he had no intention to commit SKY GLITTER from a deep draw as it was his view that if he committed this filly early, she would not finish her race off strongly. Accordingly, he had hoped to sit mid-field with cover however, SKY GLITTER was unable to secure a position either on the inside running rail or one-off in the running. This resulted in Jockey A Marcus having to race in the 3-deep running line. However, he explained to the Board that despite not finding his ideal position, this filly raced comfortably as she acquired a position racing 3-deep with cover behind AND WE DANCED (G Lerena). Thereafter, despite travelling well, when he asked SKY GLITTER for an effort in the straight, she was unable to produce a strong finishing run. Jockey A Marcus further explained that he was of the view that this filly may appreciate being dropped back in distance and will provide such feedback to Assistant Trainer L Karriem. In view of the performance of SKY GLITTER, the Board requested the Veterinary Surgeon to examine this filly.
c) Jockey A Marcus signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 62.2.3, in that as the rider of SKY GLITTER, he failed to ride this horse out to the end of the race, to the satisfaction of the Stipendiary Stewards thereby prejudicing his chances of obtaining fifth position. Accordingly, a penalty of a fine of R2000 was imposed.
d) LUCKY MISS (M Yeni), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer D C Howells advised (SC).
