THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Approaching the 100m SPIRIT OF SILVANO (K de Melo) had to be steadied away from the heels of NAVY STRENGTH (R Fourie) which shifted out away from the crop and was immediately straightened. b) Jockey A Marcus, the rider of ELECTRIC WARRIOR, reported this gelding raced with his tongue over the bit and took no interest in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine. c) Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking SUNDAY ISLAND (AUS) more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey G van Niekerk signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account Jockey G van Niekerk recent record in relation to this Rule, the distance over and manner in which Jockey G van Niekerk used his crop and the number of strikes (14) over the permissible level. d) GLOBAL ALLY, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer B Donnelly, acting on behalf of Trainer B Crawford, was advised. (TJ) e) SUNDAY ISLAND (AUS), the second-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer WA Nel was advised.
