THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) GENTLEMAN'S WAGER (T Godden) over-raced in the middle stages. b) Jockey D De Gouveia appeared before the Board, was shown the patrol films of this race and was questioned regarding the wide running line he adopted on MR FITZ (D De Gouveia) around the turn and into the straight. In this regard, Jockey D De Gouveia explained that his instructions were to obtain a clear run into the straight without the threat of having to ease. However, after this gelding over-raced in the running and NEWS STREAM (*R Venniker) had eased back around the turn, he elected to allow this horse to stride around the field before the straight in order to make its run on the outside of the course. However, once this gelding obtained the run he had anticipated, it had failed to finish its race off in the straight. The Board noted the explanation of Jockey D De Gouveia, however he was reminded of his responsibility to not cover ground unnecessarily in races. Trainer S Humby appeared before the Board and confirmed the statements of Jockey D De Gouveia in so far as related to him. Notwithstanding the explanation of Jockey D De Gouveia, the Board ordered the Veterinary Surgeon to examine of MR FITZ (10.35 lengths, 7/2 in the betting) in view of its performance. Trainer S Humby will be requested to report back to the Stipendiary Board on the condition on this gelding on return to stables. c) CROWN TOWERS (AUS) (A Marcus), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer M Trott acting on behalf of Trainer S J Snaith advised (SC). d) GENTLEMAN'S WAGER (T Godden), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
