THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) FIVE FORTUNES (*J R Syster) was stubborn loading and thereafter jumped inwards leaving the stalls.
b) KISS TO DREAM (C Zackey) and QUEEN'S NAVY (B Nyawo) were slow losing one length.
c) GIFT OF GIVING (S Khumalo) jumped outwards leaving the stalls.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) Jockey C Zackey felt something amiss with KISS TO DREAM shortly after the start and eased this filly out of the race at the 1400m. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly.
b) Approaching the 1400m, UBIQUITAS (G Lerena), and COUNTRY FLAME (K Matsunyane) were carried in marginally by ARABIAN SKY (D De Gouveia) which shifted in in order to obtain cover behind ALL THE ROSES (M Yeni).
c) When afforded the opportunity to place on record any factors which may have accounted for the performance of ARABIAN SKY, Jockey D De Gouveia confirmed that his instructions were to give this filly a chance in the early stages and obtain cover as per her previous starts. However, in a slow run race, he attempted to obtain cover with other runners behind ALL THE ROSES (M Yeni) but due to the sedate early pace, he was unable to achieve this and resulted in him racing handier than he had intended. As a consequence of this, this filly did not finish her race off as strongly as expected. Jockey De Gouveia's explanation was corroborated by the patrol film of the race.
d) WATCHING CLOSELY (D Schwarz), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer J Borman advised (AH).
When questioned regarding the poor performance of WATCHING CLOSELY on the 20th of December 2021, Trainer Borman explained to the Board that this filly prefers racing at the Vaal as shown by her form. He has undertaken where possible to restrict WATCHING CLOSELY to racing at this venue.
e) UBIQUITAS (G Lerena), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer C Dawson advised (MS).
JOCKEY CHANGES:
None.
RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER:
a) QUEEN'S NAVY raced equipped with alumites in front and unshod behind (declared 21 December 2021 at 08H41).
b) FIVE FORTUNES raced with a tongue tie on (declared 29 December 2021 at 11H31).
c) ALL THE ROSES raced equipped with blinkers (declared 29 December 2021 at 12H12).
THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED:
a) KISS TO DREAM not striding out behind. Veterinary Certificate required prior to entry. Assistant Trainer L J Human (Jnr) advised (KS).
b) ALL THE ROSES stirrup rub right-side.
c) QUEEN'S NAVY bilateral nasal discharge.
THERE WERE NO SCRATCHINGS.
