THE STARTER REPORTED: a) REX UNION (K de Melo) was restless in the stalls. b) SUNDAY ISLAND (AUS) (G van Niekerk) jumped slow, losing one length and thereafter was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) FLY OVER (J Jacobs) raced with its head up and proved difficult to settle in the early stages. b) Leaving the 300m FLY OVER (J Jacobs) was carried in marginally by REX UNION (K de Melo) which improved on the outside of FLY OVER (J Jacobs) and rolled in. As a consequence, SUNDAY ISLAND (AUS) (G van Niekerk), which was being encouraged vigorously, had to be directed to the outside of FLY OVER (J Jacobs) to obtain clear running. c) Jockey S Khumalo reported IMPACT made an abnormal respiratory noise in running and he did not persevere with his riding from the 200m. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this colt. d) REX UNION, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer DM Kannemeyer was advised.
